Chapter 3 Project 1: Extreme Bacteria! Poster
Many members of the kingdom Archaebacteria are called “extremophiles” because they live in extreme environments where most organisms would not survive. Research the following three common extremophiles (p.65 of your textbook) and make an A3 size poster:
  • Halophiles (“salt-loving”)
  • Thermophiles (“heat-loving”)
  • Acidophiles (“acid-loving”)

Your A3 size poster must include the following:
Your name(s) and date
Title: “Extreme Bacteria!” (be creative!)
The names of each type of extremophile (you can add humor, e.g., “Ace Acidophile”)
A large mug shot (picture or drawing) of each extremophile
A brief description of each extremophile (see your textbook for help):
Shape (rod-shaped, sphere-shaped or spiral-shaped)
Motility: how does it move?
How does it reproduce (must be detailed)?
o Describe why reproduction is important for your bacteria
o Asexual or sexual reproduction? Describe in detail
o Describe 2-3 advantageous of how your bacteria reproduce
How does it obtain food and energy (e.g. aerobic or anaerobic)?
Classification (Taxonomy):
What kingdom does it belong to (Archaebacteria or Eubacteria)?
What major group does it belong to (producer or consumer)?
Ecology:
Habitat: Where is its favourite hangout (where does it live)?
What important ecological role(s) does it play (if any)?
Explain what makes them “extreme” bacteria (why do we call them extremophiles?)
